Dairy Dreams: Jersey Breed Project Milks Hope for Zambia’s Farmers
A wave of optimism is sweeping through Zambia’s dairy sector as a pioneering project, designed to uplift smallholder farmers, garners high praise from the government. The Jersey Breed Focused Dairy Development in Zambia (JBFDDZ) Project, a collaborative effort championed by ADRA Zambia and funded by Jersey Overseas Aid (JOA), is being hailed as a potential game-changer, promising to transform rural livelihoods and bolster food security.
Minister of Fisheries and Livestock, Peter Kapala, speaking with palpable enthusiasm at the 2024 Jersey Herd Competition Awards Ceremony held at Tutatu Farm in Chongwe, lauded the project’s significant strides. He highlighted the strategic distribution of a remarkable 13,590 high-quality Jersey cattle breed semen straws, destined for smallholder dairy farmers across Southern, Lusaka, Central, and Copperbelt provinces.
“This is a strategic opportunity for our farmers to upgrade their dairy herds and scale their farming operations,” declared Eng. Kapala, his words resonating with the government’s unwavering commitment to agricultural advancement. He underscored how the JBFDDZ project aligns seamlessly with the national agenda to position smallholder livestock investment as a pivotal driver of economic diversification and rural empowerment.
The Minister further elaborated on the government’s steadfast dedication to cultivating an environment conducive to robust livestock production. Such an environment, he stressed, is essential for boosting productivity, enhancing nutrition, creating vital employment opportunities, and ultimately generating wealth within Zambia’s rural communities. Eng. Kapala also took a moment to commend Ms. Zewelanji Mbao, the enterprising proprietor of Tutatu Farm, and other dairy farmers for their exemplary performance in the hotly contested Jersey herd competition, recognizing their dedication as an inspiration.
Adding an international perspective, Carolyn Labey, Jersey Island’s Minister for International Development and JOA Commission Chairperson, reiterated the project’s significance. Launched in 2022, the JBFDDZ project stands as a testament to the robust and flourishing international collaboration between Jersey and Zambia.
Minister Labey passionately advocated for sustained investment in dairy farming, emphasizing its critical role in confronting the looming challenge of food insecurity, particularly in the face of an unpredictable climate.
