Advanced design features lower TCO over the excavator’s lifecycle

HPE Africa’s Hyundai R220LS excavators – designed for high efficiency in demanding earthmoving conditions – combine robust structural engineering with refined hydraulic performance. These dependable machines deliver consistent productivity in many tough industries, including construction, quarrying, mining and infrastructure.

Hyundai R220LS excavators are positioned in the 22-tonne class and are engineered to efficiently handle medium to heavy-duty workloads. An operating weight of 22 000 kg, paired with a bucket capacity of 1.2 m³, enables reliable material handling and stable operation in a wide range of jobsite requirements.

A 148 HP Cummins diesel engine, producing 63.7 kgfm of torque at 1,300 rpm, delivers sustained power output in a wide range of operating conditions, including heavy digging, lifting and travel on steep gradients.

Central to the machine’s performance is an advanced hydraulic system designed to optimise flow distribution and responsiveness. Hyundai’s CAPO (Computer Aided Power Optimisation) system ensures precise coordination between the engine and hydraulic pumps, allowing for smooth multi-function operation, while maintaining strong digging forces and consistent swing performance. This contributes to improved cycle times and more controlled operation in demanding conditions.

These machines, which are rated to climb on slopes up to 35 degrees, have a fully hydrostatic drive system with a maximum drawbar pull of 21,100 kgf. This is important for operators working on loose, muddy or sloped worksites – the high drawbar pull means the machine won’t get stuck and can self-recover in difficult ground conditions.

Fuel efficiency has been a key consideration in the R220LS design. Features like ECO mode, auto deceleration and electro-hydraulic control, help reduce fuel consumption without compromising output. In environments where operating costs are under constant scrutiny, these efficiencies support lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) over the machine’s lifecycle.

Durability is reinforced through a strengthened upper frame, robust undercarriage and heavy-duty front-end components. The use of reinforced structures and proven design principles ensures the machine can withstand harsh site conditions, while maintaining reliability over extended working periods.

Operator comfort and safety are also integral to the R220LS. This excavator features a spacious, ergonomically designed cab with improved visibility and intuitive controls, allowing operators to work productively over long shifts.

Safety systems, including boom and arm holding features, counterbalance valves and engine protection functions, contribute to stable and secure operation in arduous conditions.

Maintenance has been simplified to improve uptime of machines. Ground-level access to key service points, extended service intervals and a user-friendly diagnostic interface enable faster routine servicing and reduced downtime. The onboard display provides real-time operational data and maintenance alerts, assisting operators and technicians in proactive machine management.

Hyundai’s Hi-MATE remote management system offers fleet visibility through reliable performance monitoring, location tracking and service planning. This advanced system allows fleet operators to optimise efficiencies and respond quickly to maintenance requirements.

Hyundai R220LS excavators are backed by HPE Africa’s established support infrastructure, including access to genuine parts and technical expertise. These machines offer a reliable and efficient solution for contractors seeking dependable excavation performance in demanding African conditions.
